Best CFD for Free Surface Application
My company is looking to buy a CFD Package mainly for Free Surface applications. (Floating bodies)
We are looking for a complete package (mesh + pre/post + analysis). The code should run on a X86-64 machine.
I would like to know pro and cons of most common commercial software as CFX, Fluent, Star-CCM+, Flow3D, OpenFoam (free!), regarding this particolar application.
I have some experience done on my previous job with CFX but we would like to have a general idea on what is present on market. I'm interested to know also the ease of use of the GUI compared to CFX,
Any code have a build in routine to manage body dinamics?
If not, how to do the routine? Fortran? Visual Basic?
If somebody can give me a price for a complete package this will be helpfull too.
I'm interestd also on the price of additional solver license tu run parallel.

STAR-CCM+ handles floating bodies via DFBI technology, but I don't have any hands on experience myself. Check this example:

I found a preview on CFX12, have integrated same capability.
Now i would like to have some consideration on which software is better for this particular application and why!
Try to check Marine Report of Cd-adapco. Then You will decide to buy Cd-adapco's CFD Packages :)
STAR-CCM+ is number one for similar simulations..:D

Try to ask the people of all these codes about a need to change the water level without having to re-mesh everything i.e. doing it by simply changing the BC or model setups and not having to re-mesh. It might be advantageous to you.
On my previous work with CFX the water level was set with a Step function on boundary and the trim (change in angle of water level in respect to the boat) was done with a rotation of a CS. So no need of remesh!
I hope this could be done in any software!
