Programming question

First, my apologies for such a question. I'm trying to teach myself CFD in my spare time.

Do any of you have any suggestions for references I could use to teach myself scientific programming in C (or C++)? My codes are very sub-optimal as I don't really have a feel for how to 1)pass matricies to solver subroutines; or 2) create solver subroutines in the first place that can accept the system of equations and operate on them.

For C++, "Scientific and Engineering C++", BArton & NAckman, ISBN 0-201-53393-6.
