explanation of routine Four1 in numerical recipe book

Can anybody explain me the routine Four1 in chapter 12 , Fast Fourier Transform of Numerical recipes in Fortran (2nd edition)

i am really lost in the indexing and varaibles used.

like wht is i , j ,m , mmax

if somebody can give an overview of this fortran program, il be really grateful.
