on distance to the nearest viscous wall for Spalart-Allmaras model

Dear everybody,
Here i face an special problem on S-A turbulence model:
To simulate transonic flow past ONERA M6 wing on C-H type structure grid, beyond the wing-tip, the field points are all fluids without any solid-wall, and then there will not form boundary layer. So do keep the way for calculating the distance from field point to the closest wall, the convergence nature becomes worse or overflow. When using C-O type grid, the question talked above is gone.
Have anyone met the same problem? Thanks for your respond!

Here i have an idea, whether it can be treated as the way adopted in the wake of B-L model, wherein we compute the distance not to the wall but to the first level grid on the normal direction of the wall. Followed to this strategy, the code is convergent. But i do not know the visible mean of the method described above.
