New to CFD

I have no experience using CFD - can someone point me to an cheap (less than $1000) CFD program, so I can start to work with some simple problems?

opensource CFD package first.for example

That is definitely a joke, openfoam is not even a dedicated cfd programme. The developers of the programme define it as a Numerical Tool Kit that can be used to solve continuum field problems including cfd, stress, electro statics ....etc.
You better log on the openfoam forum and see by yourself the kind of questions being asked there

At this budget, you need to go for multi physics programmes, the list is very long, COMSOL, Ansys, Nastran, Algor,..................
may be the combination of alibre and algor fits in your budget, search, may be you find a sales representative with big heart who can make you a reasonable offer.(add the www and .com to any of the names given before)
If you are not familiar with what is a multiphysics programme, then you can download Elmer (a free open source multiphysics programme) log on
http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/phys...r/bin/windows/
and grab the latest compilation, this is the Windows version, or search their web site for instructions on how to install it on Linux and do not forget to download the documentation and tutorials.
