Numerical simulation of blowdown events

Pls,am taking on an MSc research project involving modelling & simulation of blowdown phenomena in pipelines(not vessels), with the aim being to predict, using the results, the nature of flashing experienced, whether it is droplet, planar or spray type of jets....As it is, this is a completely different area of interest for me and the challenge I have is what and what exactly to do, even though I believe ma knowledge of fluid mechanics is modestly up-to-date.
I need a thorough guide on which types or sets of equations to consider, giving that there are already designed codes for this simulation. All I need is the guide to propel me into action and I know I can go it from there...
A very detailed and useful information, considering that I am sort of new in the world of CFD softwares, is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance
