Can anyone recommend the best text out there to learn FEM for doing CFD? I have NO experience in FEM at all, and a very little bit with finite differences. I want to learn Galerkin FEM. Thanks!

hi, FEM and CFD basically uses two different approaches to solve the partial differential equations.while the former uses matrix methods to solve, the latter predominantly uses finite difference techniques.I would recommend the use of the following 1)Finite element procedures - klaus jurgen bathe ( which is good book for beginners) 2)finite element methods for fluid flows -vol.3 - zienkewicz 3) computational fluid dynamics-john.d.anderson(good for beginners) regards shivashankar

Hi,

There are many online FEM notes, but the ones that I like are by Prof. Carlos Felippa (Aero Eng) Univ of Colorado Boulder. They are in great detail.

Check out http://caswww.colorado.edu/courses.d/IFEM.d/Home.html

he also has lecture notes on Adavance and Non-Linear FEM.

Also a basic book by J.N.Reddy (professor at TAMU) called "Introduction to Finite Element method" is good for beginners is good. A low-price McGraw Hill edition is available in my country (India) for as low as 3 $.

Regards,

Abhijit
