Hello,

I am currently in my final year of Mechanical Engineering and I was wondering if companies hire entry level engineers (with only a Bachelor's) to do their CFD work. Or do most companies require that the CFD work be done by engineers with Masters/PhDs/years of experience. I'm considering taking a CFD course next semester but not sure if it will be beneficial in finding a job since I'll be only taking one CFD course.
Am I correct in assuming that most CFD jobs will go to people who have taken numerous CFD courses (probably during their graduate studies)?

Thank you for your time.

Hello Hai:

Your assumption is not correct. A new graduate with just a BS can be hired to do CFD work, especially applied CFD. What matters is whether you have experience (either through class, lab, or internship) with running CFD or other CAE software. What's also important are your grades - good grades demonstrate that you can learn new material.

Think of it this way: running a CFD code is a skill, and skills can be taught. What you bring to the table is intelligence.

These are just my opinions - I could be wrong.

You might want to consult with the career services people at your university to see if they collect data on where graduates get placed and what they do.
