Hello,

My background is Materials and now I am working on radiation and coupled radiation and conduction. I wrote codes in MATLAB and I want to start working with ANSYS, but I became confused which of them would be better for my case?
COMSOL, StarCCM, Fluent, Open foam, etc?

Can you please guide me if its possible?

Thanks in advance.

StarCCM, Fluent, and OpenFOAM are all FVM-based and very similar in terms of capabilities. However, these are excel at solving fluid flow and not conduction / radiation (they don't offer much extra compared to other available tools). I would say use whatever you like. If you're already using ANSYS then try out Fluent. StarCCM is very similar to Fluent and works pretty much the same way.

COMSOL is the odd-one-out but if you are only doing coupled radiation / conduction, it could be more optimal than the others. But optimal for the solver doesn't mean that it's optimal for you. Just use what you have and don't worry about the seaweed being greener in someone else's lake.

Thank you so much for your explanation. Now I have StarCCM in my computer but my case is evaluating the solar radiation and coupled radiation and conduction (gray and non-gray) case through solids, so as you explained Comsol would be better. yes?

If I'm informed correctly, COMSOL is a FEM package. So, as long as you don't solve convective problems (natural or forced convection) you can get away with a Finite Element Package like Comsol. And is better customizable than the Star-CCM+ and the ANSYS products. But it remains a FEM package, less suitable for flow.

Star-CCM+ is a FVM package, very well suited for convective problems. And, in my opinion, also for radiation and conduction. Moreover, it also has a FEM Solver but don't know its capabilities. You should investigate if this solver is suited for your problem. Since you have it already on your system, I would say it is worth a try.

Thank you Gert-Jan. So if I want to add convection as well in the future, using FVM would be better than FEM?

I don't know anything about modelling Solar radiation. I don't know the equations to solve, so I cannot tell.
But in general COMSOL is better customizable, so if you move away from standard problems, go ahead with COMSOL. If Flow is a great deal of your job, consider Star-CCM+
