Hi Guys,

I am trying to learn how to design a fan. I am going through various books on fan design but no book is giving any procedure to design a fan.

I also heard there are custom programs which can be used to create fan blades and then fan to be created. Could any of you help me by leading me to the right direction.

I don't want to roam around aimlessly around the CFD jungle looking for trouble.....

Megatron.

Some time ago I did an fan blade optimisation using the following tools:

pdesk for parametric blade design with a direct export to GridPro for automatic hex meshing. StarCD for calculation and postprocessing and modeFrontier for the optimisation part.

The biggest challenge was to find a smart way for dealing with the many parameters in pdesk :-)

JBeilke,

That was very helpful.... I looked into pdesk but as you were saying it is way complicated for a beginner though. I thought of starting with hand calculation and then transfering it to design data!!!

May be that is not good idea!!! But I still need to know the basics rite....

You have to do 2 things at first :-)

1) doing some hand calculations and transfer them to a program like pdesk

2) setup a way to do cfd calculations

Hand calculations are fine to understand the topic and also to reduce the number of parameters during an optimisation. But at some point you have to create a "real" geometry and there you need something like pdesk (there also might be other similar programs).

You will find that going from 2d to 3d is not quit trivial.
