driven cavity (ghia)

hey

are there any experimental results for driven cavity flow???

secondly Ghia also did numerical study and its been used again and agian for the vlidation?? i am really confused that why?? wht is the thing in Ghia data tht makes it a benchmark ?? and how cna we actually compare the numerical results to another numerical results and can say tht the acheme tht we developed is performing fine??

I don't really know the answer to your question, and can only speak for myself. The Ghia computation was really good for the time and method. There are a number of published results with other methods that are in better agreement among themselves than with Ghia, but the difference is small, in the last Ghia digit. The 2D computational problem is an artificial one. The usual boundary condition at the lid corners is difficult handle experimentally, and the experimental arrangement is really 3D. The Ghia result is readily available and if your new code agrees with Ghia, then it is probably performing correctly, which is what you want a benchmark to do for you.

I'm agree with Jonas Holdeman. The 2D case of the Lid driven cavity is only a artificial representation. Nonetheless it's usefull to learn the physics and it's also a benchmark due to the many publications as step before to continue on others numerical simulation.(see Paper of Erturk, 2009, Discussions on driven cavity flow)
So Ghia computation is really good if you want to check your 2D code. There's also the paper of Botella and Peyret (1998) using spectral method.

What are you looking for in the lid driven cavity? Do you just want check your code?
If yes:
-Make sure you re using the same formulation (Primitive variable, Vorticity-Stream function..)
-The same numerical method (FV,EF,DF, Spectral..)
-Mesh, time step
- How you deal the singularity in the corners.

For an experiment of the 3D lid driven cavity, you can read the paper of Feldmann and Al (2010), not as been publish but on google scholar.
