# Starting a 3D URANS simulation from a converged 2D URANS simulation

 June 4, 2011, 18:43 Starting a 3D URANS simulation from a converged 2D URANS simulation #1 Senior Member   Joshua Counsil Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Posts: 366 Rep Power: 10 Good day - When studying airfoils, many DNS and LES users solve a two-dimensional (2D) simulation at first to resolve the general characteristics, then employ a three-dimensional (3D) model with the initial condition set as the converged solution of the 2D simulation. Is there any reason this concept shouldn't work for URANS? The airfoil, mesh, and other setup parameters are identical from the 2D and 3D - the only thing that changes is the airfoil now has a finite span, but no span-wise variations, i.e., no taper. It is just an airfoil profile with a finite length. Thanks for your help.

Dear Josh,
To my understanding, DES and LES are not recommended for 2D at all. I have asked a similar question on the forum DES in 2D ????
but no one has replied to it yet. Please reply to it if possible.

I have run URANS simulations in 2D and want to run them in 3D with the initial conditions set as the converged solutions of the 2D URANS.
