determining Steady state

Hello, I was told that if i want to know if a buoyancy driven natural ventilation has reached steady state using LES... it would be best to monitor the transient averages at different locations in the computational domain. These could be the transient averages of the second order moments or the total kinetic energy. Could you please explain what is it about these parameters that determines if a steady state has been reached? Thank you.

Regards,
Faisal Durrani.
