Simulating the effect of dust/sand/grime/dirt on a mechanical joint?

Hi guys,

I've developed a device with two mechanical joints (each has 2 DoF) and since it will be used in dusty/sandy environments (it will be attached to the outside of the vehicle), I'd like to know how they'll perform in dusty/sandy environments.

How would I go about doing that? I haven't purchased any CFD told yet so I'm wide open to any suggestions!

Thanks!

I'm not familiar, but I have heard DEM is good for particles, for a rudimentary explanation see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrete_element_method
