Default Mixture Fraction

i have generally seen the mixture fraction defined as:

mf = (Zf - Zf,2) / (Zf,1 - Zf,2)

where these are element mass fractions so i can work out a mixture fraction for say carbon or oxygen or nitrogen etc.

however i have also seen:

mf = (Zf - Yf,2) / (Yf,1 - Yf,2)

where the Y's are species mass fraction.

Can someone please explain this second form to me. How can i be combining the element and species mass fractions and surely the two are not equal?
