And you'd have an even harder time postprocessing those (don't know how much memory Paraview uses when NO data is loaded, but on your machine it would be substantial amount)

Try windowmaker as the windowm
 
Try windowmaker as the windowmanager. Use Debian minimal install or such. And I guess, you will be only able to run "Mini Mouse" cases.

There is damn small linux, but as Martin said, you can get a 1GB of RAM nowadays for around 15.
