I've compiled openFOAM via a gentoo ebuild. I started the first tutorial (icoFOAM/cavity) but openFOAM could not find paraview. After searching my system, i could not find a paraview program, even though it was supposedly successfully emerged, only a directory /usr/lib64/paraview3.4 with other files. I've tried paraview3.3-pre(...) and currently have paraview3.4 installed.

Check your environment variables (etc/bashrc and etc/settings.sh). I remember that in the development version, the path to paraview was missing a "-".

I was able to download the paraview 3.4 binary from paraview.org, and adjusted all the variables so that I could run paraview. Now when I run paraFOAM it finds paraview, and it begins to open but crashes, qt then prints out an error message.

I've discovered that the gentoo ebuild for paraview disables qt4, that's why it doesn't create a paraview program. I've resorted to using foamToVTK and opening files with paraview directly.

It's available via the sunrise overlay. You can follow the gentoo overlay howto if you haven't set one up already. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Overlay
