I have managed to install the base configuration ok (OFv1.5 on Ubuntu 9.04).
However, the installation test comes back with one critical error in the path definition of icoFoam.

Can someone point me to the right direction to look ?... I am getting confused with the various directories in the OpenFOAM directory structure.

To install applications to my own dir, simply set the env variable FOAM_APPBIN to the same place as $FOAM_USER_APPBIN and the critical error from foamInstallationTest goes away. Is this correct?... If so, why not put a comment in the settings.sh for new installers?... Take it as just a suggestion from a new user.

Hi Robert,

If you want to compile your own applications you can copy the relevant tutorial to your ~/OpenFOAM/<your_user_name-1.5>/applications and change "FOAM_APPBIN" into "FOAM_USER_APPBIN" in icoFoam/Make/files. There you can also change the name of the solver if you like. Then, compile the solver with wmake (with first wclean, if you need to). Is this what you mean?

Yes, I have compiled my the code to my own user directory.
I have recompiled the source code. I have also downloaded Qt and recompiled paraView. However, as I read the user document, I can just translate the output data to vtk and use the standard paraview distribution.
It took a weekend to figure it all out, and it was a good learning experience. Now I can play with the cases, and develop my own applications. This is where the fun begins...
