Hello,

I am running OF1.6 but I had to use PV3.8. While I can invoke it with paraFoam, I do not get the opening panel as in Figure 6.1 of the user guide. For example, I don't get the update GUI option.

Here is the story:

I installed OF1.6 on 64-bit RHEL5. It all went smoothly except for paraview. I had two errors:

  • libssl.so.0.9.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory -- solved by linking from /lib64/libssl.so.0.9.8e
  • symbol lookup error: /home/sm/OpenFOAM/ThirdParty-1.6/paraview-3.6.1/platforms/linux64Gcc/bin/libvtkQtChart.so.pv3.6: undefined symbol: _ZN14QGraphicsScene11eventFilterEP7QObjectP6QEvent * -- I tried to rebuild paraview, but did not remove error.
So, I picked up on the thread http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...tml#post263925 and installed PV3.8.

I then modified OpenFOAM files as follows:

$HOME/OpenFoam/OpenFoam-1.6/bin/paraFoam

  • Changed $caseFile extensions from OpenFOAM to foam
  • Changed call to paraview to full path to paraview V 3.8

$HOME/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.6/etc/apps/paraview3/bashrc

No changes, since the ParaView was linking to python paths, and those were unchanged. Did I miss something there?

Thanks,

Mirko

Greetings Mirko,

The "Object Inspector" widget in ParaView 3.8 looks a bit different from the version in the user manual, or more specifically, the "Properties" tab in that widget doesn't have the same exact options.

So, the question is: how many controls do you actually get in the "Properties" tab? That tab in my Windows ParaView 3.8 version, when opening the cavity case, gives the picture attached. So, you get the same thing?

Best regards,
Bruno

Hi Bruno,

yes, my `Properties' tab has the same layout as yours.

Did you figure out how to activate `update GUI' in PV3.8?

Thanks,

Mirko

Hi Mirko,

It took me a little while to figure it out too. Apparently it's under a different name... it's called in ParaView 3.8: "List timesteps according to controlDict"
At least it made a refresh on the number of available time snapshots.

In case you want to refresh the current snapshot, maybe going back and forth in the time controls will do the trick

Best regards,
Bruno

Ha, good catch. I'll give it a try.

Thanks,

Mirko

Hi,

is there another way to make update update the number of available time steps? The way described here works, but isn't very comfortable. For example if the time step size was changed during the simulation, there is a difference whether the checkbox "List timesteps according to controlDict" is switched on or off. So to update the number of time steps keeping the "List.."-setting one have to click the checkbox, click "Apply" and onece again click the ckeckbox and then "Apply". (4 clicks)
It becomes even worth, if one currently has a filter activated in another paraview-window (for example I'm using the "plot over line"-filter). In this case you can't reach the "List.."-checkbox even by activating the "case.foam" in the pipeline browser, unless you additionally activate the main window. In this case I need 11! clicks and one scroll to update the time step number and return back.

I'm using paraview 3.8.0.

regards,
Illya

P.S. Ist the procedure the same in paraview 3.10?

Greetings Illya,

Yes, sadly this is still the same with ParaView 3.10.
But there is something that is available to both versions: command tracing and Python Macro creation -> Python GUI Tools
This way you can record the steps you take each time, and the next time you simply have to run the macro! I believe this has been made simpler in 3.10.

Best regards,
Bruno

Thanks a lot Bruno!

Do you have an example oder at least a hint, how the macro should look like? I have absolutely no python experience.

Best regards,
Illya
