Installation how-to's - OpenFOAM 1.7 - openSUSE 11.2 and 11.3
I updated the how-to's on my blog to reflect the changes required to build OpenFOAM 1.7:
Thanks to Martin for his help to build on openSUSE 11.3. Best, |
Hi Alberto,
I start with a fresh installation of Suse 11.2 x64 and I have followed your guide step by step without success. I have a good experience with Ubuntu (1.7.x compiled without problems) but with Suse is the first time and I am a little bit lost... I post a little piece of my log file, there are thousands of the same errors for a lots of applications.. Quote:
Hope you will help me Thank in advice |
Hi,
hard to tell from that error message. Could you please run ./Allwmake again and post the first occurrence of an error, or the whole log file as attachment? Additionally, you might want to check the md5sum of the source package you downloaded, to be sure it is not damaged. Best, |

Just run ./Allwmake and press Ctrl-C when the first errors appear, then cut and paste that in a file. :-)

1.7.0 version, compiled without issues, could be a problem related to git version?
I have had some problems to download git version with Suse; for this reason I have dowloaded git version to an USB key using Ubuntu-PC, then copy-paste the folder on Suse-PC and finally update the folder by git-pull command..What do you think about that? I have just installed the git-core package on SUSE but if I try to download the git version through Suse I got the error posted: Quote:

Here you find a package of working source taken from git this morning:

Hi, Alberto,
I installed the just-released OpenSUSE 11.3 64 bit OS. OF-1.7.x (from git) compiled successfully, I also recompiled paraview and paraFoam. A tutorial case completed without any error. However, each time I started paraFoam, paraview ended up frozen. I noticed that you installed 11.3 RC, I am wondering if you run into the same problem. Pei |
It works fine on 11.3, but I do not have any problem also on 11.2, so I'm not sure.
Best, |
Hi, Alberto,
I never have any problem with 11.2. I am wondering if you can do a quick test. After loading the case by starting paraFoam, can you re-set the Opacity to say 0.3? And see if your paraview freezes or not? This problem happens to me every time. If I do not re-set the Opacity, paraview seems to be fine. Thanks! Pei |
Hi Alberto,
I have come to the conclusion that you have successfully worked with openSUSE platform, OpenFOAM and ParaView. As a newbie in Linux I use openSUSE 11.2, OpenFOAM 1.7.0 and I am trying to install ParaView 3.8.0. My relating thread is on: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...tml#post267932 I am wondering whether a straightforward way for installing (functionally) ParaView 3.8.0 exists. Could you please provide me with a hint? Thank you, Menandros |

I do not use paraFoam, but the pvFoam reader on the wiki however, because it seems to be more reliable on different platforms, and less sensitive to the versions of the libraries. Best, |

From there you can choose whether to install OpenFOAM 1.7.0 or 1.7.x, since the instructions shouldn't be very different! Best regards, Bruno |
Many thanks Alberto,
(I received an email-notification a couple of days after your reply.) At last I have been trying to become familiar with OpenFOAM/Paraview some days now. After installing openSUSE 11.3 the problem with my graphic card was over (thanks to the updated 'radeon' driver). I wish that also other people take advantage of the list of the actions/tips mentioned in the thread 'http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/openfoam-paraview/78243-installation-problem-paraview-3-8-0-opensuse-11-2-a.html#post269879'. Other than that, I think that openSUSE 11.3, compared to 11.2 succeeds in keeping my laptop's temperature at a significantly lower level, even 'suspend to RAM' does work! I couldn't work on ParaView using paraFoam. Thanks to your tip in your site, I am able to work on it, using pvFoam! Best regards, Menandros |
You are welcome. OpenSUSE 11.3 is going to receive also a good number of patches following user reports, which should make it be a very nice release also for who has very recent hardware (iCore and similar).
About paraFoam, I never figured out how to make it work consistently. It seems oversensitive to Qt versions and paraview versions unfortunately. pvFoam behaves more smoothly. Best, |
thanks bruno
