ahlo7 is on a distinguished road
Hi, All

I am going to install OpenFOAM on a HP Elite i7 qua-core 64bit machine, but I was not able to go any far...
I was stuck with Ubuntu 10.04LTS. in installation with this machine. I got live CD to start with. After restart with the live CD, I saw the Ubunbtu logo with flash dots... then the screen became black with CDROM running. I searched on the internet, there was the same thing happened to the other people. But I did not found any solutions from both Ubuntu and HP user forums.
I put my question here to see if any one could help. The same CD works on another computer AMD due-core computer.

Thanks

Greetings ahlo7,

When dealing with bleeding edge hardware, you'll have to use bleeding edge operating systems!
First try booting the LiveCD into the testing mode, namely test directly from Live CD. Try booting a few times, to confirm if it always boots with the live CD! By my experience, it doesn't always boot properly if the hardware isn't fully compatible.

Then try Ubuntu 10.10 or openSUSE 11.3 or wait a couple of days and try/install openSUSE 11.4.
Also try the server editions, since they usually don't have much of a dependency of graphic card drivers and you get direct visibility of what is happening during the boot process.

If neither work, you'll have to start cataloguing all of the components that make up you HP Elite and search on the internet if any of the components are only supported starting from a particular version of a Linux Kernel. When you find the top kernel version for all of the components, then start searching for an Linux OS that uses that kernel.

Another thing you might want to figure out is how to get a access to the full boot log of the Linux OS you're trying to use. Nowadays they usually hide this log and accessing it will change from OS to OS. Some you just have to hit Esc key during boot, others you'll have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 or some other F? key.

Another possibility is if your machine has RAID enabled... then things get even more complicated....

Either way, in these situations of new bleeding-edge workstations, the best would be to request that the OS comes pre-installed, precisely to avoid these situations

Best regards,
Bruno
