It's highly appreciated if you can illustrate, step by step, how to install openfoam on ubuntu 1.4 to an armature Ubuntu users (its just a couple of days that I have installed ubuntu )
I have downloaded these two files from openfoam website

gcc-4.2.1.linux.tgz
ThirdParty-2.0.0.gtgz

Hi,

take a look at http://www.openfoam.com/download/ubuntu.php
alternative way to install http://www.openfoam.com/download/source.php
or git install http://www.openfoam.com/download/git.php

you may also have a look at OFwiki
http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Installation
http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Ho...sitory_version)

The blogs and posts from Bruno Santos http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/members/wyldckat.html
are of great value

thanks for the reply
the problem is, its just a couple of days I have installed ubuntu
and dont know how to install applications in it

for example in the second link
it says:

Quote:
After the installation directory is chosen (and, if necessary, created), simply copy the 2 source pack files into the directory and unpack using tar xzf <filename>, e.g. from the installation directory:

tar xzf OpenFOAM-2.0.1.gtgz
tar xzf ThirdParty-2.0.1.gtgz
I dont know what it means by " unpack using tar xzf <filename>,"

for this I created this topic looking for simpler way or maybe an illustration with some screenshots, video tutorials etc for a novice ubuntu user

I've seen this thread a few times and felt unwilling to reply, because OpenFOAM still requires people to pull back their sleeves and start searching for answers... specially since OpenFOAM is almost 100% command line oriented

Anyway, for people who are new to Ubuntu, they should start looking for tutorials about using Ubuntu! In this case, the door to what you seek is this tutorial: Ubuntu Linux Tutorial Chapt12. Introduction to the Terminal 1
This video tutorial explains how to use the Ubuntu terminal and where it is accessible. From there, you can then follow the instructions written on the official pages at www.openfoam.com.

This will be sort-of like taking a drivers license, because with OpenFOAM (and most CFD software), one must train their eyes and their perception capabilities to be very focused on what one is doing. One wrong command, one wrong character, or even one wrong space, could lead to disaster...
OK, maybe it's not this dangerous, but if one puts the decimal point one digit to the left or right, one will have either 10x or 0.1 times the gravity acceleration; or even happen what happened with me a few years ago, where my geometry was defined in mm, instead of m... which meant that I was trying to simulate about 1/10th of the Earth's atmosphere, instead of one single living room

But I digress... basically installing OpenFOAM is like when butterflies are born: it's necessary tons of patience during gestation and then a lot of effort to get out of the cocoon. Any help during that process could lead to a reduced life expectancy for the butterfly In this case, newbies might give up on OpenFOAM a lot sooner, even after having installed OpenFOAM... although if they can't even install it, they give up without really starting...

Either way, fear not because a lot of video instructions are already available for using OpenFOAM! Many of them are on this thread: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...-openfoam.html

Last but not least: after you've finally managed to install OpenFOAM, consider if you want to make a video about how to install it in Ubuntu

Best regards,
Bruno
