I think you can remesh STL surface but you will still have a surface mesh. I didn't try to construct a solid mesh from that surface mesh. Maybe it can be exported to Tetgen to generate the solid mesh. I don't know because I haven't worked with Tetgen.

Yes. I use it instead of blockMesh, because it has many solid modelling tools such as extrusion of surface into solids. As you extrude the surfaces you can also extrude the 2D mesh to form 3D meshes.

There is also a dxf2geo program which might be promising but I still haven't tried this.

I also use it for post-processing. When you open Gmsh it seems it doesn't have too many tools because the menus are so small. But after working with it I was surprised with its post-processing capabilities.

I've never managed to create anything else than a surface mesh with imported STL gemometry in gmsh.

For creating tet-meshes out of STL I suggest to use
"netgen" from J. Schöberl. You will find a link at the gmsh homepage.

Another useful command-line utility is "admesh", to fix some problems of STL files.

I think the new STL-remeshing option in gmsh might be helpful to get a better STL-surface.

Import of this surface into netgen should work.

1) Where is this dxf2geo utility located? I googled for it and searched in gmsh-directory. Couldn't find it.

2) Billy, how do you use gmsh for postprocessing (with Foam or with you own stuff)?

3) I have netgen - however it's too bad that I can't figure out all those advanced options and the documentation isn't finished, AFAIR. Thanks for the admesh-hint - I downloaded it and will see if I can try it out in some weeks...

I installed using rpm file and the binary is in /usr/bin/dxf2geo

I use gmsh for post-processing my own stuff. With FOAM, I use paraview for post-processing.

Hello foamers,

does anyone know if the is corrected already? Or do you still have to use the forum-version?

Best regards,

Kate
