Hi everyone,

I'm really sorry for posting this question again, but my previous post hasn't received any replies so far, and in the meantime I didn't get any further solving my problem myself. I know this looks like a problem that has been solved before, and that there should be answers somewhere on this forum. It's just that I can't find anything specifically on baffles, and the other answers didn't help me so far.

I'm trying to mesh a sail geometry, which I import into snappyHexMesh (OF7) from an stl-file. As the geometry has zero thickness, I'm treating it as a baffle. Even though I'm using explicit feature snapping (and the extracted edges look nice and smooth), in the final mesh the edges of my sail turn out rather badly (see attached images).

Looking through the Snappy log-file (see attached), I do see some warnings, but overall SnappyHexMesh doesn't seem to run into any serious trouble. My experience with SHM is too limited to exactly pin down what's going wrong based on the log-file, unfortunately.

What I've tried so far:
- Refining the background mesh
- Refining the edge mesh
- Refining the surface mesh
- Increasing/decreasing resolveFeatureAngle
- Playing around with settings in snapControls (nSmoothPatch, tolerance, nSolveIter, nRelaxIter, nFeatureSnapIter)
- I came across the tip to relax the mesh quality settings, but I'm unsure which setting(s) would help me here.

None of these settings seem to make much of a difference though. Is there something that I'm missing/doing wrong?

Again, any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks,
Sita

Hi Sita, I am having the same issues with infinitely thin sails. Did you end up finding a solution? Thanks

Hi Tanya,

Sorry, no, not really. I ended up using a commercial mesher (Hexpress, by Numeca), but that wasn't ideal either to be honest.

In the meantime I've switched jobs, so I haven't spent any more time on this. Hope you'll find a solution soon!

Sita
