Dear colleagues,

We are very proud to announce the release of the IHFOAM bundle.

What makes IHFOAM different from the rest of OpenFOAM solvers is the Volume-Averaged Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (VARANS) equations along with the corrected advection of the phases, accounting for the porosity of the cells, that allow the simulation of two-phase flows through porous media. On top of that, a collection of boundary conditions handle wave generation and active absorption at the boundaries, without the use of numerical damping areas. These specific boundary conditions allows the generation of any type of wave in a 3D domain, from the most simple regular waves (Stokes I, II and V, cnoidal, streamfunction...) to complex, real and fully 3D irregular (random) directional sea states.

Active wave absorption has been programmed to work simultaneously with the wave generation to absorb any incident waves on the boundaries. These features do not increase the computational cost noticeably, and there is no need to extend the numerical domain, as it occurs with relaxation zones. Moreover, they allow for longer and more stable simulations without increasing water or agitation levels.

Currently the model can be applied to solve any kind of coastal/offshore/hydraulic structures, both static and dynamic (floating structures). Some examples that have been simulated include: wave interaction with vertical and rubble mound breakwaters, ships, offshore foundations, dam and spillway simulations, open channel flow, etc... Needless to say, a thorough validation with well-known laboratory tests has been carried out and is published in Coastal Engineering.

The source code is provided free of charge, along with a reference manual and tutorial cases. You can find the complete model capabilities, additional materials and detailed instructions on how to download, compile and run the code at IHFOAM web site:

http://ihfoam.ihcantabria.com/source-download/

We look forward to having feedback from you.

Best regards,

Pablo Higuera, Javier L. Lara and Iņigo J. Losada

AUGUST 2014 DIGEST:

Dear all,

we are pleased to make several announcements.

First, we have reached more than 200 users in this short time and we are looking forward to continue growing and providing better solutions. So far the code improvements have been focused in allowing full compatibility for those of you running OpenFOAM on MAC computers and fixing small bugs, but very soon we will incorporate new functionalities as the volume-averaged k-epsilon and k-omega SST turbulence models.

We would also like to announce a new edition of the IH2VOF and IHFOAM courses at the IH Cantabria's headquarters (Santander, Spain) during the second week of October. You can find all the details at the following web sites:

http://ih2vof.ihcantabria.com/
http://ihfoam.ihcantabria.com/

IH2VOF is a 2D Navier-Stokes solver currently used by consultants all around the world to simulate real structures. Its simplicity (GUI-oriented) and outstanding performance make possible to assess the functionality and stability of a structure subjected to a given sea state in less than 24 hours in a regular PC.

IHFOAM is a state-of-the-art 3D Navier Stokes solver for water waves. Its most relevant features include active wave generation and absorption at the boundaries and the Volume-Averaged RANS equation with which porous media flow can be calculated. The training course covers from all the basics needed to learn to use OpenFOAM, to all sorts of advanced techniques, and tutorial cases not included in the materials released, namely:

- Residual monitoring
- Video rendering
- Runtime sampling
- Sampling with Paraview
- Dynamic mesh refinement
- Moving and deforming meshes
- Creating and compiling solvers/libraries/utilities

The combined use of IH2VOF and IHFOAM models has proven very convenient in order to save computational cost in 3D simulations. This methodology has been successfully applied in the following paper:

Dear all,

it is my pleasure to communicate a couple of announcements:

First, IHFOAM source code has been updated to provide full support for OpenFOAM versions 2.3.0 and 2.4.0. The tutorials have also been updated. Previously, no porous media solver was included for these versions. However, pressure calculation is different from the previous versions, proceed with care.

The download and update instructions, and more information on the pressure issues can be found in the IHFOAM wiki:

http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Contrib/IHFOAM

Second, a new paper that demonstrates new IHFOAM capabilities is out in Coastal Engineering. The new functionality, soon to be released, adds moving boundary wave generation and absorption to IHFOAM. You can find it here:

http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.coastaleng.2015.04.003

Three-dimensional numerical wave generation with moving boundaries.
Higuera, P., Losada, I.J. and Lara, J.L. (2015)
Coastal Engineering, Vol. 101, pp. 35-47

And third, the PhD thesis within which IHFOAM has been developed is now available online for free download. The document (in English + Spanish) includes an extensive description of the solver, validation examples and exciting new real cases. You can find it in the following link:

Best regards,

Pablo
