I once again request you to read the user guide. Its all in there. Forum users assume that you have read the user manual.
Anyways I try to answer your question:

OpenFOAM commands have a general format:

command <root> <case>

where <root> is your root directory
where <case> is the directory where you case lives

before executing a command make sure that you know what is your <root> and <case>

now with your username your shell prompt should be something like:

ivan@hostname:~>

cd to the directory where your case lives so that when you do ll it should list you case directory
Then try
ivan@hostname:~> paraFoam . cavity

In the above example your <root> is the current directory "." and cavity is your <case> directory.

For more info check out some Linux forum.

Hope that helps
Jaswinder
