Hi everybody.
I have a problem. In order to display U vectors (simpleFoam case) I always used Cell Centers and Gliph filters, as in cavity tutorial. Today I obtain this message:
Code:
$ paraFoam
created temporary 'tandem_blade_7_0_better.OpenFOAM'
ERROR: In /OpenFOAM/ThirdParty-1.6.x/paraview-3.6.1/VTK/Common/vtkDataArrayTemplate.txx, line 142
vtkFloatArray (0x1c3fa530): Unable to allocate 155116653 elements of size 4 bytes.
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
what():  std::bad_alloc
/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.6.x/bin/paraFoam: line 111: 27881 Aborted                 paraview --data="$caseFile"
Is it a memory problem?

Hi Maurizio, I see you're using OpenFOAM very successfully

I've come across that very same issue a couple of weeks ago. Basically, that message means that the machine doesn't have about 600MB of contiguous free RAM (and Swap doesn't count)!

But there is a rather simple solution, without resorting to buying more RAM: you must change the resolution of the glyphs! If you change the resolution for each arrow to have less triangles on the head and the body, then you can represent a lot more arrows in a single scene!
The exact names of the relevant resolutions of the Arrow are:
  • Tip Resolution
  • Shaft Resolution
The other values don't affect the amount of RAM required for generating the glyphs/arrows!

Best regards,
Bruno

Thank you, Bruno. I thought Ubuntu and 4 Gb RAM were enough...
Your hint works and now I can get my smart coloured gliphs and streamlines
You seem to have a solution for every section of the forum

Cheers,
Maurizio

I'm glad it worked As someone once said:

Alas I'm only somewhat fluent in installing OpenFOAM, and dabble with post-processing (with ParaView only). Everything else in the middle is still one seriously giant black box

Best regards,
Bruno
