[OpenFOAM] What are Zones used for

I can successfully view the internal mesh and scalars with my reader, but I am unsure what the pointZones, faceZones, and cellZones, are used for in the icoDyFoam/mixer2D. What/how are these files used?

They contain sets of points/faces/cells.

In the mixer case they e.g. give the cells on the inside of the mixer (so the ones that rotate) and e.g. the faces that are being projected onto eachother.

Let me rephrase my question. Do I need these for the paraview reader? Do you use these in parafoam?

Also how about the mesh modifier do I need those for paraview?

I guess I am a little confused as to what files are necessary to visualize versus those that are necessary to calculate.

faceZones/cellZones are selections of faces/cells. These are sometimes interesting to look at. You do not need them per se.

meshModifiers are not nessecary for visualization.

You need
- points
- faces
- owner
- neighbour
- boundary

It used to work in dxFoam (in fact, it still does), but I don't know how to do it in paraview. Any suggestions are welcome.

Assuming that you have setSet compiled, it automatically generates VTK output (unless you specify '-noVTK').

BTW: You can partial automate the process - just pipe in your desired commands via stdin into setSet.

(btw. setSet has -batch option which reads file)
