I am trying to find an example data set in the tutorials that contains cell types other than hexahedron. could someone point me to some data sets that have other cell types. ideaally I would like to locate a sample set for each type.

for triangular prisms etc.

If you want real polyhedra, use the mixer2D tutorial and write the mesh for partial coverage - when it is not "clicked in", so to speak.

/home/hjasak/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.3/tutorials/icoDyMFoam/mixer2D

There are some more prisms in collapsed wedge cases, e.g.:

/home/hjasak/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.3/tutorials/icoDyMFoam/movingCone
