[OpenFOAM] ParaView 3.6.1 and my laptop freeze

When I load ParaView 3.6.1 with paraFoam, for any tutorial case and hit the edit color map option in the display menu, my laptop freezes. I can't even kill the process running (paraview-real) from other machines. The only option is to force the reboot!
I use fedora 11, 64 bit.

Anyone for help please?

I probably can't help (don't have a laptop, don't have fedora), but the usual culprits are the video driver or the window manager. For example, with certain versions of the nvidia driver we've seen total keyboard/mouse lockup with other software (not paraview/vtk). You should probably look there first. You can also try with a different desktop window manager without any desktop effects (eg, failsafe) and see if that changes things.

I could confirm this behavior with my HP 6530b laptop, 32bit F11 OS version.

If I remember correctly,updating to F12 or using F10 could avoid the freezing problem,but then you will have other problem with the messy colorbar.

Now I could not find solution to this problem.I give up F11 to F10,at least I do not need to reboot,but I could not get fancy colorbar,now I have to plot with another PC.

Hope somebody could help.

Thanks for your reply. I think I am going to give up on Fedora 11, unless someone gives us a solution to the problem. It's a shame seems to be a good one.

Hi,Just for information.

I have tried different combinations of qt4.3,qt4.5,paraview 3.4,paraview 3.6.1,F10,F11,F12 on my hp 6530b laptop,none of the combination is perfect.But with my previous hp 6710b laptop,it's good.

Now I guess the problem is related to different graphic card,though both are from Intel.

Since I have used Fedora for some time thus am reluctant to move to another OS. Also I guess I will have similiar problem with other linux distro because the Intel graphic driver is open.

Please report back if you resolve this problem with other method,or using other OS.

Dear all, almost same problems here:

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, OF 1.6 with vtkPOpenFOAMReader. My hardware: Laptop HP, Intel Core 2 Duo, video Intel GME965.

I can open a large mesh (without results yet), but when I tried to do a cut of the mesh, the system freezes. The only thing I can do is reboot or "Alt+PrntScreen+R->E->I->S->U->B".

Previously, I had the same video problems with Ubuntu 9.04, I thought 9.10 will solve my problems, but not.

The Intel driver is 2.9.0, and kernel is 2.9.30,

Any ideas? Is this a driver problem or paraviews/OF problem?

Hi Lin,
I gave up on fedora and installed the new Opensuse 11.2 (which seems really cool). My previous problem seems to be resolved. I ll keep my fingers crossed!

I have tested "vesa" drivers on Fedora 10. It also solve my problem. But with "vesa" driver I could only get 1024x768 resolution,which is not good. The default is 1280x800.

I'll give it a try to Opensuse this weekend. But my question is: What's the difference with the other OS? Because, if this is a kernel problem we just need to compile the same kernel version (Ubuntu 9.10 use 2.6.31-5 and Opensuse 11.2 use 2.6.31.5). The kernel's stable version in www.kernel.org is 2.6.31.6. Or, if the problem is the video driver (I have an Intel GME965, in Ubuntu 9.10 the driver's version is 2.9.0) we need to compile the Intel video driver.

I don't understand what's the real problem. I'll try to compile the kernel or driver before reinstall the OS.

I haved tried F12 today.paraview does not freeze the system,just as F10. But I still get blurred colorbar.

Hello everybody!

Last weekend I installed OpenSUSE 11.2. About the video driver's version, OpenSUSE use's intel video driver 2.9.1, this is the last version available.

I was very happy, until today...My laptop freezes again

.

But now I have more details about when it happens. The system freezes when I try to see some part with opacity. Just load the mesh, change the opacity to 0.5, then the system hangs up.

I'm not using any desktop effect.

I would appreciate any help.

on my laptop occurs exactly the same problem. Without the ATI driver everything (in ParaView / ParaFoam) works fine, but 3D Acceleration is quite poor and multimonitoring is complicated as well. The point is that I'm not keen to use the Mesa or Vesa driver...

Any solutions so far? Isn't there some kind of special mode for paraview that improves the openGL compatibility? Any ideas?

I couldn't find a solution yet. But I'm almost sure that my problem is the Intel video driver. I've used openSuse 11.2 since November. Everything works fine but transparency feature. If I try to select transparency the laptop freezes in a few seconds. So, I've not used transparency since November

As I understand you aren't using the driver provided by ATI. Why? I installed several machines with nvidia and the drivers, and Paraview, worked fine.

I guess that my explanation was a bit poor. Using the ATI (fglrx) driver leads to the mentioned problems. Editing color ranges is impossible. When I'm using the opensource driver (VESA or MESA) instead the errors do not occurr but rendering is significantly slower. Dual-View or multi-monitoring also is not that easy with these drivers...

I'm sorry, but I don't have experience with ATI hardware. I installed Nvidia using both the ubuntu driver and the one downloaded with envy soft. envy is a program to download the last driver available directly from nvidia or ATI. I used a few times with good results.
