sample utility surfaceformat as grid data for gnuplot circular crosssection

Hello everyone,
I just got started with using gnuplot as my postprocessing tool in combination with the sample utility. Now I want to creat 3d graphs and contourplots. For this I need to use the function set dgrid3d in order for gnuplot to interpolate between the different values.
My data set is a plane thats the circular cross section of a cylinder. After interpolating, the plots are for squares rather than the original circle. How to do any better?
I got the idea that the data has to be stored in grid data format, in order to not use the dgrid3d option. However its way too many data points to sort this manually..
Any help would be appreciated!!
