Hi All,

I am very new to OpenFoam and have a simple questions for you.

I usually use public domain computers to do my simulations (I submit the job and it stays in queue). Now I have the following questions for you:

Since the simulations are 3D and need very large space to store many snapshots, if I want to have 2D planes within the domain (for example I want to store the data at each 200 time steps just inside the plane z=0 or even a portion of that plane), how can I do that?

Thanks in advance for your guidance

Hi,

You can use the utility called "sample" by specifying your plane in the dictionary system/sampleDict

You can copy a sampleDict in your case directory with:

Code:
cp $FOAM_UTILITIES/postProcessing/sampling/sample/sampleDict system/.
Once your sampleDict is edited as you wished, you just run
Code:
sample
You will have your results in a new "postProcessing" directory.

Cheers,
Cyprien

Thanks a lot Cyprien,

I'll give it a shot tomorrow when I have access to my office computer. Just to clarify:

It seems that what you said should be done after the simulation is over. Right?

If yes, then for that, we need to have 3D data stored at desired times first. Right?

Hi Cyprien again,

I did the sampling and some data have been generated. Thanks.

New question for you:

1-What should we do to make those samples readable by Tecplot? it seems to me that running the "foamToTecplot360", will only generate 3D PLT files.

2-Can we do it on a portion of a plane as well?

I really appreciate your help.
