Hello Bruno,

thank you for your reply.

I'm using Tecplot 360 2013R1.
This error message occurs only with some tutorials, like the motorbike tutorial.

Other tutorials like the 2D_airfoil tutorial are working and there is no problem importing the solution into tecplot with the fea OpenFOAM reader.

If i do the checkMesh -constan in my motorbike tutorial directory, i get the following output:

And wenn I'm going to import the controlDict into tecplot, I get the same error message as before.

OK, then the last thing that comes to mind is whether you have the compression option turned on in "system/controlDict".

Another way to check this is to check the contents of the folder "constant/polyMesh/" and see if the "points" and other files have the extension ".gz". If they do, then that might be the reason why Tecplot is not being able to see the files

All the files in the constant/polyMesh directory don't have the extension ".gz". What else can be the problem?

It's strange, because other tutorials run completely and I can import them correct into Tecplot.

Are you certain that you get the same exact error message as anfho indicated in post #17?

Because only a few possibilities come to mind:
  1. Perhaps it's because the boundary patches that have names that the FEA Loader is not prepared to handle, such as "motorBike_rr-wh-rim:005-shadow%17" - the ":" and "%" could be the problem.
  2. Perhaps the problem is that this tutorial case relies on "#include" for including data from other files, which is done for most file inside the "0" folder.

You are right. There are lots of : and % in the polyMesh- file. Perhaps this is the problem.
Nevertheless, now i've installed ParaView to analyse the motorBike- tutorial. Some other tutorials do work with tecplot, as i mentioned in a former post...

Hello everyone!

I recently started working with OpenFoam and encountered the same problem with Tecplot as Johan_87.
I ran the icoFoam tutorial "Cavity" and used the openFoam dataloader in Tecplot 360 2012R1 to visualize the results. When I probe the wall coordinates the velocities are not zero even though the no-slip condition is set at the boundary.
Using paraFoam for visualization, I get the correct values of zero at the wall. The solution data files also show zeros.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Is there a bug in the Tecplot loader?

I hope you can help me with this, I would be very glad to continue working with Tecplot for postprocessing...

The quick answer should be: you're looking at the data for the cell centers (aka Cell Data on ParaView). You need to look at the data from the cell vertexes (aka Point Data on ParaView). But I have no idea how Tecplot does this.

I did some research here in the forum prior to my post but I could not find a solution to the problem...

I try to give some more explanations in the following:
When I look at the solution data file in an editor, I find the no-slip boundary condition on the wall, e.g. zero velocity. This is also the case for visualization in paraFoam.
When I use the OpenFoam data loader which is integrated in Tecplot, the visualization software loads all the patches including the one for the wall. Each patch is attributed to a Tecplot zone. Now I only activate the wall zone in the Zone Style menu, so all other zones are hidden. With point probe Tecplot gives me the correct coordinates but the velocity is not zero. Furthermore it says that the value given at the node is interpolated. This is correct since openFoam gives the values cell-centered and Tecplot interpolates the data on the cell nodes. However, the wall consists of faces and hence an openFoam value which is zero should be given for the center of each wall face, right?
If I use Spreadsheet in Tecplot, it also shows the non-zero values on the wall zone.

A colleague of mine checked his calculation results in Tecplot and he also observes the non-zero velocities. So the problem is not limited to my computer/set-up. He uses the same versions of OpenFoam (2.1) and Tecplot (Tec360 2012R1), though.

I know the utility foamtotecplot360 to convert the OpenFOAM file to Tecplot but is the reverse possible ?

Are you certain you want to export to an OpenFOAM file? Don't you instead want to open the data in ParaView, for comparing with data from OpenFOAM?
I ask this because it's possible to open Tecplot data in ParaView 4.1.0.

As for the utility "tecplot360ToFoam": it does not exist, or at least not publicly. It's theoretically possible, but probably not easy to code.

Yes Sir,Actually I have .plt type Tecplot format file and I want to do further analysis on the data.So,I need to open the file in OpenFOAM and hence looking for any utility for conversion of .plt file to OpenFOAM readable format.

I have tried to write data in Ascii format from tecplot360 and opening the same .dat file in paraview but it was not possible.Can we give input to the OpenFOAM from .dat file(obtained after writing data in ascii format using tecplot) ?or how to convert the .plt file into OpenFOAM format

After a research i found this explanation to how install foamToTecplot:

Then when i execute Allwmake i receive the error message:

Did not find tecio in /home/diogo/OpenFOAM/ThirdParty-2.2.1. Not building foamToTecplot360.

Hello Diogo, we have an OpenFOAM loader in Tecplot 360 2013-R1.

1. Run Tecplot 360 2013-R1 > click on the File menu > Load Data File(s) > select OpenFOAM (FEA) > click OK

2. In the OpenFOAM dialog > click on the "..." button to open your controlDict file in your system folder > click the OK button

Dear Forum,

I found today that tecplot omits symmTensor (for instance, volSymmTensorField) while loading openfoam data. Anybody knows a solution? It is much appreciated.

I am using Tecplot 360 2013R1 and OpenFOAM 2.1.1.

Editing: it seems to me Tecplot cannot load any variables with more than 3 components.

To my opinion the native Tecplot loader is quite nice, but still has some problems, e.g., with boundary conditions and the interpolation of fields. Hopefully, Tecplot will fix this in future. Very nice is the feature to load parallel cases without reconstructPar. However, always if I am not sure if everything is displayed correctly or when I miss some functionality I use foamToTecplot360, which still works very good and is included in OpenFoam Repository. To install it just do:
