Do I need to rewrite a solver?
is there already such an utility or some other way to do it?

You do need to add some things

You do need to add some things to the solver you want to use, but these things allready exists in the form of probes.

Have a look at the LES code oodles. It allows the user to specify probe locations via a dictionary. You only need to add a few lines to incorporate probe functionality.

Pardon me for restarting this

Pardon me for restarting this thread. But could someone point out how this is done? I'm a total n00b to all this.

And pardon me too for restarting really late, but exactly the same question :)
I read on other parts of the forum that a functionality like this is included in the Oodles tutorial but this is no longer present in OF 2.0.

Basically Im searching for a way to save flow variables at specific points in space in my domain during the simulation. I dont have the space to save my entire domain for many timesteps so I can sample it in post-processing.

Take a look at the incompressible/pisoFoam/les/pitzDaily tutorial: there you will see how to enable probes functionality inside the controlDict and how to set probes position in your domain
