Contact problem (boundary condition) for stress analysis

Dear Foamers,

In the paper "Finite Volume Methodology for Contact Problems of Linear Elastic Solids" by Jasak and Weller (2000), it seems there exists a BC for the contact problem in linear elastic stress analysis.

I wonder if this BC can be found by default in OF (I searched the derived BCs folder but none seems to have a representative name of the problem). If not, how can one obtain such BC?

Best regards,
Hisham

This paper refers to a solver that was written for FOAM (predecessor of OpenFOAM) and it now resides in the OpenFOAM Extend branch (i.e. OpenFOAM-1.6-ext).

You can find it in $FOAM_SOLVERS/newStressAnalysis/newContactStressFoam.

However this solver does not work correctly anymore.
I am working on a different contact stress solver as part of my PhD and it works better (OpenFOAM Workshop Presentation and Abstract). It still has some bugs but gives good results.

I can send you my latest solver and a test case if you like (just private mail me your email address)? Some time over the next year I will probably tidy up this solver and it can be put into OpenFOAM Extend and the older non-working one can be removed.

Hi Philip,

It is great to know you're working on that problem. I will take a look at the OpenFOAM-extend first to understand the FOAM approach to contact.

My simulations involve soil-structure interaction, for which (my simulations) the contact problem is not of utmost significance. I can somehow define a weaker soil-zone (very thin) around the structure. It is usually done in FEM codes by considering elements of zero lengths with reduced material properties.

Nevertheless, I take great interest in updates about the contact problem.

Not to cause you so much trouble as things do not seem straightforward with contact in OF. I will let you know after I get my solver running so I may implement your contact segments in it. In the time being, I guess I'll delay focus on the frictional contact of soil-structure.

Thanks and best regards,
