OpenFoam Large files

Hi foamers,

I have problem of storing files of OpenFoam simulations. Case folder sizes are usually in 20-50 GB size for a mesh with a small number of cells ( 300000). If I got 3million cells this would become 100 GB or more. When I am doing LES the situation is even worse. How can I reduce the file sizes. Otherwise the space runs out pretty quickly.

Are you saving binary compressed?

Hi Anton,
Thanks for the reply. I usually specify

writeFormat ascii; and
writeCompression off; in my controlDict of the case.

if I put binary and compression on is there anything else need to be done to read the files back.

You don't give any information how you are planning to process the data, but usually the answer is 'no'. You will be able to work with it in exactly the same manner, yet much more efficiently. If you do run into trouble (which is unlikely), you can always use foamFormatConvert to go back to ASCII.

is there a way to compress the polyMesh Dictionary?
