This morning I was looking at the donation button in the OpenFOAM page, and the following idea came to my mind:

is it legally possible to create in the OpenFOAM web-page a button
where if I click:
- I can give them my credit card number
- and they can take every month let's say 3dollars, or 3 euros, a small amount every month until I decide that I want to stop?

I know that there is the donation button. The problem with that button is that I forget. Or I'm simply lazy to reinsert my credit number, click here there, bla bla bla. While I would be perfectly OK to make the donation process automatic, every month they (= the foundation or who is legally behind openFOAM) take the small amount of money. If I only could have an option "click here for a monthly donation 3 dollars each month" I would just click.

Sorry for the naive question, I'm just a user with few experience in openSource, GPL, and finance: would be possible to add this " monthly donation" button in the OpenFOAM website (and also why not in openFOAMwiki, openFOAM extend), or it would be legally unacceptable? Why in community driven projects this kind of financial option is not available?

If I remember correctly, wikipedia does offer the option for an automatic monthly donation, so it should be possible. I'm not sure if anybody from the OpenFOAM foundation will pick up your proposal here, so you better contact them directly.

http://www.openfoam.org/index.php there is a button "Donate to OpenFOAM"
http://sourceforge.net/donate/index.php?group_id=135709

Another nice initiative is the "CoCoons Project" that should be supported!
http://www.cocoons-project.org/ the focus of the CoCoons Project is for now on community-driven documentation of the OpenFOAMŪ CFD Toolbox for Computational Continuum Mechanics
