What do the cyclic BCs actually do?

Dear foamers,
It seems a little hard to get to know what the cyclic BC actually does. I believe it doesn't simply tell "value here = value at the associated boundary", because this is obviously not what cycling is about. So, does it have the solver consider the boundary faces are actually internal faces connected with the cells to which the associated boundary faces belong? Or is it more complicated than that?
