I totally agree with you. Even not changing fvSchemes, using a relTol of 1e-2 produced goods results, even if PIMPLE did not converged within 20 iterations, max Courant number was lower than all the previous case.

Following your suggest I initialized the case with potentialFoam

Can you post the checkMesh output?
You could also try this:
1) Also set the velocity divScheme to 1st order upwind.
2) Set "turbOnFinalIterOnly false;" in PIMPLE. This will let the turbulence equations solve in each outer PIMPLE loop instead of just the last one. I expect that this is more stable.

Michele, you still use second order upwind for velocity. You should change it to "div(phi, U) Gauss upwind;" if you encounter stability problems like you do.
Did you run the potentialFOAM solver before you start PIMPLE? Do you know how?

At least you get convergence of PIMPLE now, right?

You could now a) reduce the time step or b) have a look at the result picture of time step 1 and see where the cell with the large Co is located. You could than try to get a better grid there.
Most probably you have some sharp corner with small cells.
