I am after some advice. I am in the (very) early stages of my DPhil that will be studying the interaction of biological fluid with the surrounding tissue.

In essence, I will be studying the tissue using poroelastic theory and would like to couple this with the flow of fluid in two different compartments (interstitial fluid and blood). The interaction is highly coupled, and the tissue will undergo large scale deformation.

I have access to commercial CFD solvers that can do the job, however, I have wanted to investigate OpenFOAM for a while now.

Firstly, (and I assume the answer is yes) does OpenFOAM have the capability to complete this task?

Secondly, can anyone suggest the best place to start learning OpenFOAM for this kind of simulation (once the basics are sorted)?

Have a look at a recent presentation from University College Dublin: lots of biological simulations and FSI...

Biological FSI in OpenFOAM

Enjoy,
