Hello OpenFOAMers,

i'm new to OpenFOAM and i just practiced a bit with the "cavity"-tutorial. (i simply let OpenFOAM calculate it in 3D)

Now i want to simulate a Rayleigh-Bernard-convektion in a tank.
I want that i can set temperatures on the top and bottom of the tank and set the velocity-field U to zero and then simulate this Rayleigh-Bernard-cell.
But now i don't really know which solver i have to use. I searched the manual (User Guide) and i found the following solvers: "rhoSonicFoam", "rhopSonicFoam", "rhoTurbFoam" and "rhoSimpleFoam".

Out of the description (on the right hand side in the manual) i believe it would good to use the "rhoSimpleFoam"-solver, but when i want to create a case i can't find this solver ins the drop down menu of the solver-selection. Why i can't find it?

Cause of that, i tried it with the "rhoTurbFoam"-solver. But here i have a next question. I chose the patchtype "fixedTemperatureWallFunctions" for the top and bottom and "adiabaticWallFunctions" for the 4 rest-patches and set the fields (U everwhere zero and two different values for bottom and top T). I set the other values to zero, cause i don't really know what they are (k, epsilon and R). Now, after looking in paraview the mesh and the values at time 0 (all seems ok), i started the simulation, but it immediatelly breaks with this error:

#0 Foam::error::printStack(Foam:stream&) in "/home/sool/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.4.1/lib/linux64GccDPOpt/libOpenFOAM.so"

#9 Foam::regIOobject::readIfModified() in "/home/sool/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-1.4.1/applications/bin/linux64GccDPOpt/rhoTurbFoam "

I don't know what's wrong - i think i set not all variables in the fields and/ or somethings in the dictionaries wrong. Can you please give me a help? Thank you.

Thank you for the hint Dave. I overread this in the manual. With the "buoyantFoam" it is working and with the "rhoTurbFoam" too. I found a really little (and stupid) error - made by me - in the field entries.
