For now, I only have a window
 
For now, I only have a windows OS. Soon I wish to get a Linux machine. However, I would like to start working with OpenFOAM right away.

Can anyone give me advice on which source files I should study to understand how OpenFOAM works. Or in other words which are the most important source files for setting up the equations and solving them.

That depends entirely on what
 
That depends entirely on what kind of problems you want to solve.

The solver top level codes are all inside applications/solvers in the OpenFOAM directory.
