Which Solver/Model to use for flow over Circular Cylinder ? Re [1 , 10^6]

hi guys!

I have a solver-question and need your experience. Want to simulate and compare (with literatur) the flow over a circular cylinder for Re = 1 till 1 000 000 with blockMesh and snappyHexMesh.

This will be my first work with OpenFoam and i have no experience with different solvers and models. Up to now i only used simpleFoam kOmegaSST from the motorbike tutorial, because my forrunner used it. But in my case i think it doesn´t work very well.

Can somebody tell me what solver/model would be the best for what Re-region???

Thanks in advance!

best regards
Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,

as long as your flow is incompressible (Ma<0.3) you can stay with simpleFoam. The kWSST model is ok as well. You can also change to k-epsilon which I find is a bit more robust.

You must especially be careful with the wall functions (nutWallFunction in 0/nut). For the standard wall function the yPlus should be around 30 ... 300. So you need to adapt the grid for every Re.
