Calculate velocity components from shear stress

Hi all,

Regarding this thread http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...interfoam.html, the shear stress at the boundary can be calculated either as tau = mu * (dU/dy), or by the Reynolds Stress Tensor.

The shear velocity can be calculated as u* = sqrt(tau/rho). In terms of calculating the absolute (magnitude) value, this is not a problem.
But how can I (technically) calculate the velocity components x, y, z, i.e. shear velocity components, assuming I have a 3D space? I'm not aware of any rule calculating the square root of a vector/tensor.

Any hints?

Arne
