Several versions of openFoam with the frequent releases makes a developer little more busy in bookkeeping and maintaining the extended code and corresponding OF releases. this suggestion is looking good, as majority of code is shared between the versions, a mechanism can be devised to build applications (icoFoam) with version number as argument. Total OpenFoam foot print may reduce dramatically by merging all versions into single repository using git.

Hmm, I feel that your suggestion is going to increase the redundency of the code. And also this suggestion sounds not feasible especially whenever there is the big change in code structure. For example , for some reason they put most of the blockMesh files under src/ rather than application folder.

The appropriate place to suggest (serious) features is the mantis tracking tool.

About this suggestion: I do not see any advantage on shortening options, since it's easier to remember meaningful words rather than arbitrary letters.

@chandramurthy It would be quite messy to maintain such a code.

Best,
