Yes, we understand that it is NOT usefulll FOR YOU!

What did you say? How many million $ did you sponsor to improve the user guide?
Who are you that you tell us how a documentation should look like???

Thx for your nice answer!

I did not choose to use OF, i have to.
I think the programm (as far is i know) is really well structured and programmed, BUT this is not very usefull without a proper documentation!
(by the way, if there was no OF, the university would spend money on a properly documented programm.... so thanks to that :-P)

And if people spend so much time designing they might wanna use some time for documentation, since only then people can enjoy the their work.

Why are you so pissed? Is OF like a family member?
Did you volunteer for many hours programming it?

AND I started a thread with the intension to collect all the data conserning the documentation..
thats the best I can do right now....

A search in the forum for "documentation project" would have saved you the effort. Unfortunately at the moment there seems to be no widespread interest in having organized documentation, and the only project in that direction is stuck. Further details can be found in the long thread I pointed you to.

Best,

Best,
hi Alberto,

thx for the post!
I read through "doc. projekt" and i would like to NOT use OpenFOAM(R) anymore...whats the matter with them

And I still havenot got a documentation ..

I have spend days now looking for things even though i should be working on other things...but i guess thats the regular with OF.

The wiki has been down for 2 days now !(?)
Why does Prof. Marschall not provide his documentation with another name as an pdf? Being handed on...without any big waves?

best regards

Exactly. And why does he not visit you and teach you private lessons?

Hi Robert,

i would like that too.

I just figured that he has put a lot of work in it, not to earn money, but to help others.
To hand on the pdf would be the most easy way not to throw his work away...

hey people ,, calm down ,,

really i agree that openfoam may need a very extensive user guide ( may be U-2000 instead of U-215 ) , and also need an easy and much time saver way to creat complex meshes ,, but no one doubt that it have the most powerful solvers in the world of simulation.

i think it is a matter of time until openfoam win the war against the commercial softwares

i think openfoam is the future

I don't think this is the right attitude. OpenFOAM(r) is a good code, so not using it because it is not documented at the moment won't help the situation.

The reasons why there is no documentation are, at least in part, due to the composition of the community. With a quick survey on what they do for a living, you will find part of the answer. The other part is that community members not related to consultancy activities (like me) are busy with other work, are students or simply are not contributing.

Only with the help of more users the situation can change. Of course this assumes that users are open to share what they do, which is not always (rarely?) true, but anyway a larger user base increases the probability of having more documentation in some way. For example, you could study blockMesh and document it

On a side note, we had already a long discussion on the topic of documenting OpenFOAM. It clearly did not lead to any clear way to have documentation. Let's not repeat it. It is of no help to anyone to make big statements about not using the code or going on to judge the developers. We have different positions, we know that already, but it does not mean OF suddenly becomes something not to use. Let's be constructive, after all we are using something that costed years and years of work, and we do not give back much.

Best,
