Why does accessing a zeroGradient patch return (0 0 0) for a volVectorField

If a patch is zeroGradient, why does accessing a volVectorField return (0 0 0)? This doesn't happen with a volScalarField. In other words:

Info << someVolScalarField.boundaryField()[patchID] << endl;
will give something non-zero.

Info << someVolVectorField.boundaryField()[patchID] << endl;
will give n(0 0 0).
