Hello,

I prepared a distribution based on openSUSE, with some of the most popular open source tools for CFD and computational activities.

Three formats are available:
  • Live DVD
  • Live USB / Hard drive image (it can be used as permanent image)
  • vmWare / VirtualBox image, for use on virtualized hosts or under other operating systems

You find the list of the included applications here

http://albertopassalacqua.com/?p=747

and more information on the latest release here

http://albertopassalacqua.com/?p=759

At the moment the distribution is only available via SUSE Gallery

http://susegallery.com/a/2qtLK2/geekocfd

which means you need an account there to be able to download the image (waiting for approval of trademark redistribution from openSUSE, since this project is meant also as a promotional initiative of openSUSE, who provided the infrastructure, and quite some help to realize it).
As said in the post on my blog, I have a few invites for SUSE Studio / Gallery remaining. If someone is willing to test, please let me know.

Best,
Alberto

Hello Alberto,

thank you for your effort.
Unfortunately I am still not able to enjoy GeekoCFD.

I unpacked the image and want to copy it onto a free partition. I suppose that it is done with

Code:
dd if=GeekoCFD.x86_64-1.0.6.raw of=/dev/sdaX
When I want to mount it it tells me that the file system type is not recognized. Do I have to add some more parameters to fill up the rest of the partition with zeros or do I have to take care of the block size?

Thank you for your help. Markus

BTW: I was not able to boot the GeekoCFD DVD with any grub parameter. Possibly a problem with my graphics adapter. It always finished with a black screen instead of a log-in-interface. I will try it on another machine some day.

Hi Markus,

it is possible you have problems with the block size, because the images are a bit sensitive to this. According to SUSE Studio help (http://en.opensuse.org//openSUSE:SUS....28in_Linux.29), you should do something like:
Code:
sudo dd if=/home/suse/myappliance.raw of=/dev/sdb bs=4k
For you screen problem with the live image, did you try with the grub option "nomodeset"? With this, you should at least be able to understand what goes wrong.

Thanks for your feedback.

Hello Alberto,

unfortunately none of your suggestions helped to solve the problems.

When I run dd with the bs=4k option I am neither able to mount the partition. Maybe I can try to mount the image and copy all the files onto the partition "by hand".

Thanks, Markus.

The only hint I can give is to install from DVD, but if you cannot see anything on the screen, I am not sure the distribution will work properly on your machine.

Copying files by hand won't do the job. However, if you manage to install openSUSE 11.3 without my image, I can link you to the binaries I pre-built.

What video card do you have?

Best,

Hello! GeekoCFD may be a good solution for all CFD users, but why don't you consider to put it into P2P network (gnutella, emule, bitorrent,...) ? This is fast and free - I think better option to distribute such images... CAElinux is distributed by torrent network.

Anyway - great distro! Thanks!
Maniek

PS. @markusrehm

Try unetbootin.

First, format USB pendrive to FAT, mount it, use unetbootin (sudo unetbootin) and you have got what you wanted.

Using DD - replace bs=4k with bs=4096

GeekoCFD is built with SUSE Studio and can be downloaded by all its users for free.

P2P is not well seen in many academic institutions, especially in the US. As a consequence I do not believe it is a good choice.

An alternative solution is hosting it on sourceforge, but the images are pretty large.

I see. I have heard about all those strange things in US (censorhip, etc...). In Europe P2P is OK. The advantage of P2P is - as I said before - speed and low cost of distribution.

Anyway - thank you for such distro!

Yes, I know. It is fine also here. During uploads however an automatic system sends e-mails to inform you that you are uploading every 24 hours, and the activity is monitored. This happens with a lot of services (even dropbox or Skype!). As a consequence it is quite messy. This makes it annoying to keep a constant connection active for this kind of activity.

If you want a copy of the distro, I still have some invitation to SUSE Studio and I can give you the link. Please, send me an e-mail.

The plan is to update GeekoCFD at each release of OpenFOAM. If my estimates are correct, this means that the next version of GeekoCFD will be based on openSUSE 11.4.

Best,

GeekoCFD 2, based on openSUSE 11.4, with OpenFOAM 2.0.x and most of the packages updated is now available:

http://susegallery.com/a/2qtLK2/geekocfd

To download the image, you need a SUSE Studio account. The registration is free however and open.

Best,

GeekoCFD is now updated to version 2.2.0, which brings OpenFOAM 2.0.x (x >= 1), following the release of OpenFOAM 2.0.1.

I also built a reduce image, without graphical interface and tools, which only provides OpenFOAM in a text-mode environment with network. This version is also available in Amazon EC2 format.

As usual, images can be downloaded from SUSE Studio:
