Validation cases

Hi,

I am interested in performing a set of verification/validation cases for openfoam applications.

Is there already a validation case repository for openfoam models?
If not, are there people interested in collecting OpenFoam validation cases and placing them in a new repository.

This could be very usefull for users to become familiar with building accurate numerical models and understanding the uncertainty in their results.

Best regards,
George

Hi George,

in deed there exist some repositories for validation cases.
you will find them here when you look for validation. However just the
Turbo-machinery, Turbulence and Ship Hydrodynamic SIGs have these
repositories. Since OpenFom is slightly more than these fields of special
interest it could be that your favorite one is not among them.
However for Ship validation cases you should look for

Kriso VLCC2
Kriso Container
Naval Combatant
5415
Hamburg Test Case

which are the most famous ones. They are either build and/or validated with model
tests and other codes. For the Hamburg Test case I know that they are also using it as
a benchmark for a commercial code.

I hope that helps
regards
Colin

Thanks for the link. I went to it (http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/SI...pellers:_EA779), but only saw a list of the casenames (with no details or data).

Do I need to become a member and login to access the data/results?

Best regards,
George

No, you don't have to login it is just an list of available cases which are somewhere around in the internet. The best way is to ask google for these cases and look for the gothenburg workshop 2010. They have listed the results from various model basins around the world.

George, the ERCOFTAC Database might be useful for your interests, I prepared a paper validating laminar/LES/D-LES FOAM solvers based on these benchmarks and other ones. It'll be available soon:

Title: COMPARISON OF SINGLE PHASE LAMINAR AND LARGE EDDY SIMULATION (LES) SOLVERS USING THE OPENFOAM SUITE
Authors: Márquez Damián, Santiago; Nigro, Norberto

from the MECOM-CILAMCE 2010 congress.

Hi,
for turbomachinery look
http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Si..._get_the_files
or
https://openfoam-extend.svn.sourcefo...eder_1.5/OSIG/

for Ship Hydrodynamics cases I would contact Eric Paterson http://www.personal.psu.edu/egp11/Er.../about_me.html

not to forget the "test-harness" Stuff http://www.extend-project.de/project...d-test-harness

Thanks so much for all the usefull suggestions. I can't wait to try out some of these cases :-)

One remark though: It seems that some excellent validation work has been done on Openfoam, but that the cases are a bit strewn across different websites... I would recommend that there be made some sort of central webpage that links these cases together. I think that would inspire confidence in the quality of OpenFoam and accelerate the development of new validation cases.

Cheers,
G
