Ok I finally got ubuntu 11.10 32 bit installed via virtual box on my 64 bit win7 home (legit).
This was about two days ago, I was going well through the first official OpenFOAM tutorial, didnt finish it, had paraFoam open with the first cavity tutorial open, then decided to close that and the terminal (only programs open at the time). I start up my virtual box some hours before posting this up and nothing seems to make 'cd $FOAM_RUN/OpenFOAM/root-2.1.0/run/tutorials/incompressible/icoFoam/cavity' work! error message: "bash: cd: /OpenFOAM/root-2.1.0/run/tutorials/incompressible/icoFoam/cavity: No such file or directory" Tried a few things, unlocking my account, 'sudo -s', cd to the icoFoam folder, then going cd $FOAM_RUN/cavity, nothing worked. EDIT: also copied the 'run' file in OpenFOAM/root-2.1.0 to a new folder in my home directory called 'openfoam' and 'cd $FOAM_RUN/~~' still didn't work =| 'mkdir -p $FOAM_RUN/run' was able to tell me that the terminal was running a process. Totally forgot what I did to make OpenFOAM run a few days ago, but it DID WORK! |

It seems that $FOAM_RUN environment variable is not set.
What do you get as output if you type: a.) echo $FOAM_RUN b.) which simpleFoam in terminal. Did you add source /opt/openfoam210/etc/bashrc to your ~/.bashrc file, like described in installation manual? |

Thanks for the reply, I've given up today lol
I'll tell you what I get when I start my CFD adventures tomorrow again. Man linux/unix is so incredibly foreign for windows users EDIT: 'echo $FOAM_RUN' and 'which simpleFoam' in the terminal do nothing except leave a blank line, but then when I type 'sudo -s' with my password and try to close the terminal, after individually typing the first 2 commands, the terminal detects there is a process running in the terminal. I just added 'source /opt/openfoam210/etc/bashrc' in the ~/.bashrc file in the appropriate location outlined in the manual, so now when I 'cd $FOAM_RUN/tutorials/incompressible/icoFoam/cavity' it'll say 'bash: cd: /home/[username]/OpenFOAM/[username]-2.1.0/run/openfoam/tutorials/incompressible/icoFoam/cavity: No such file or directory' Problem is I haven't copied over the tutorial files in root-2.1.0 to [username]-2.1.0 because 'I am not the owner, no permission etc' even though I am an administrator (and the only account on my ubuntu virtualbox) and typed in 'sudo -s', so I can't make new folders in the OpenFOAM directory. SECOND EDIT (my apologies): Just tried typing paraFoam and icoFoam for the heck of it whilst those processes were running in the terminal, and it fatal errors, 'FOAM FATAL IO ERROR: cannot find file, file: ~~controlDict at line 0, FOAM exiting' I assume its because I haven't copied over the files to [username]-2.1.0 and/or because I didn't change the directory to the appropriate one.
